Vol. 3 No. 31 | Aug. 2, 2006

P1 changes begin soon;
Knoles to close to thru traffic

North campus will continue its evolution as two major projects begin.

  • Capital Assets and Services this week will begin installing fencing around parking lot 1 near the corner of Butler and Milton this week as work starts on the university's hotel-conference center project.
  • Knoles Drive will permanently close to thru traffic for southbound traffic at McMullen Circle and northbound traffic at Tormey Avenue. Vehicles will be redirected.

Employees may continue to park in P1 until it closes, which is expected Aug. 14. Work on alternative parking areas is nearing completion.

As a result of P1's closure, the Mountain Line Transfer Center near Humphreys and Dupont will move across Milton Road to Malpais Lane between Jack-in-the-Box and the fire station near the Greyhound Bus terminal. The change begins Saturday morning.

NAU faculty, staff and students who use the transfer center can catch a free ride on a Route 3 Mountain Line bus from the dental clinic at Humphreys and Butler to the new center.

Knoles Drive will close to thru traffic Aug. 28 following Welcome Weekend.

Planters will be placed in an "L" shape across Knoles from the south end of the Blome building sidewalk to the corner of McMullen Circle, across from the Gammage building.

Northbound Knoles traffic will be routed west on Tormey Avenue behind Geology and Gammage and back on to Knoles or east on Tormey behind Old Main (see map to the right). Southbound Knoles traffic will be routed along McMullen Circle between the North Union and North Morton Hall to Dupont Drive.

A gate will be installed near Blome to allow buses and emergency vehicles to travel along Knoles from north to south campus.

Kathe Shinham, vice president for administration and finance, said the change is the first step in reducing vehicle traffic throughout the campus, which is part of the university's master plan.

Additionally, she explained, the change will mean less traffic mingling with construction vehicles near the hotel-conference center site.

On-street metered parking will be added to Knoles near the North Union for visitors to NAU. Some metered parking is also being considered for P3 behind Gammage.
