Vice president for Research candidate on campus

Meet the candidate for NAU's vice president for Research during an open forum from 1:15-2:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, in the large pod of Applied Research and Development, building 56.

Donald H. DeHayes, dean of the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont, will be in Flagstaff this week to interview for the vice president for Research position.

He currently leads the Rubenstein School's educational goals, research, outreach activities, finances, fundraising and collaborative efforts. The school includes 500 undergraduates, 120 graduate and doctoral students, 42 faculty and 31 research and administrative staff.

His recent research focused on the biological implications of anthropogenic stresses on forests. His current research focuses on the mechanism of impact of acidic deposition on forests and the genetics of forest ecosystems.

DeHayes has received prestigious teaching awards. In 2006, the University of Vermont established the endowed Donald DeHayes Multicultural Scholarship fund to honor his support for cultural diversity and equity. He has received research and education grants exceeding $13.5 million and has authored more than 100 published articles and book chapters.

DeHayes has raised more than $32 million in private funds to support environmental program initiatives, scholarships and endowed professorships, including a $15 million naming gift for the Rubenstein School. He serves on numerous boards and is past president of the National Association of University Forest Resources Programs, a consortium of 69 universities and partner agencies and nonprofits. He is currently on the Vermont Governor's Commission on Climate Change.

DeHayes received his bachelor's degree in Earth and space science (geology) from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and his master's in genetics of forest ecosystems and a doctorate in the genetics and physiology of forest ecosystems from Michigan State University.
