Diverse lineup for NAU's American Indian Heritage Month Like a good harvest, this November's American Indian Heritage Month at NAU offers a bountiful menu. More than 60 events celebrate indigenous cultures with some of today's hottest Native authors, speakers, artisans, music, photography, art and more. From learning about celestial influences on Hopi life cycles to watching a Mayan basket take shape or witnessing the weaving of a Navajo chief blanket, diverse cultures find the spotlight in diverse ways. "This year's American Indian Heritage Month represents a university and community effort to highlight Native issues, traditions and gifts so society can understand what the Native population has to offer," said Octaviana Trujillo, professor and chair for NAU's Applied Indigenous Studies program. Take your pick from demonstrations, Native feasts, book signings, discussions with filmmakers, films, flute carving and playing, poetry readings, a chance to listen to Navajo Bible recordings, attend an arts and crafts fair, or hear the challenges faced by Olympic gold medal winner Billy Mills. Besides cultural events, there also are health screenings, a segment on Native rights and opportunities for academic guidance. The month culminates Nov. 29 with the Miss Indian NAU Pageant.
