NAU professor to lead National Indian Education Association

Willard Gilbert, a professor in the College of Education, was elected to a one-year term as president of the National Indian Education Association during its 38th annual convention in Honolulu this month.

Gilbert is a member of the Hopi Tribe and is from the village of Moenkopi in northeastern Arizona.

He came to NAU in 1986 and teaches in the educational specialties department where he has served as chair. His research interests are in the learning styles of minority children, cooperative learning techniques for minority children and critical thinking.

The National Indian Education Association was founded in 1969 to support traditional Native cultures and values, to enable Native learners to become contributing members of their communities, to promote Native control of educational institutions, and to improve educational opportunities and resources for American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians throughout the United States.
