New director takes ITEP helm

Cal Seciwa, former director of the American Indian Institute at Arizona State University, has been named director of NAU's Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals.

"ITEP is very community based and focused on environmental and tribal issues," Seciwa said. "I've always had a respect and reverence for our land and people, and I knew this position would allow me to pursue my growing passion in these areas. It was a great professional and personal opportunity. I couldn't pass it up."

Seciwa, who has served at ASU since 1989, began his new position March 5.

"The institute is absolutely delighted to have found Cal Seciwa," said Laura Huenneke, dean of NAU College of Engineering and Natural Sciences. "He has tremendous experience in leading American Indian programs. We are very fortunate to have a leader like him coming to make our programs even stronger and to help ITEP achieve even more valuable partnerships with other parts of the university."

Seciwa takes over from Mehrdad Khatibi, who has served as interim director since Virgil Masayesva's death in 2005.
