  • Mary I. Dereshiwsky, associate professor of educational leadership, served as moderator of the Successful Online Presentations conference sponsored by the Learning Resources Network Feb. 27 to March 1.
  • Natalie Hess, professor of BME/ESL at NAU-Yuma, has had a paper, "Children and Parents: A Thematic Approach to Adult Education," accepted for publication in the next issue of CA-TESOL Journal, a peer-refereed publication.
  • Sherri McCarthy, professor of educational psychology at NAU-Yuma, along with Eva Brotherton, a graduate student in the counseling/human relations program, and Yuma County Attorney Mary White, will present "Building Healthy Communities in Cooperation with the Courts: The Interface Between Psychological Services, Mentoring and Restorative Justice Programs," at the Forensic Psychology Invited Symposia of the International Council of Psychologists annual meeting Aug. 11-14 in San Diego, Calif.
  • Helaine McLain, associate professor in the School of Art, was published in the book Finding Your Visual Voice: A Painter's Guide to Developing an Artistic Style, which was released by North Light Books in February. Five of the paintings from McLain's series "Kemet/Deshret" also were published in the book. She reviewed and edited the text for the author, Dakota Mitchell.
  • Bill Pederson, lecturer and site coordinator of the NAU-Yuma bachelor's in social work program, has been selected by the Arizona chapter of the National Association of Social Workers for the Branch 1 Social Worker of the Year Award for 2006.
  • Shannon Snow, a 2006 graduate in visual communication, won an honorable mention in Print magazine's 2007 student cover competition. Her work is published in the March/April issue.

    Snow created the cover as a class project in professor Rodrigo De Toledo's VC433 Information Graphics class. Her cover and four others were chosen by the visual communication faculty and submitted to the competition.

  • William Wiist, professor and chair of health sciences, will be the principal investigator along with Bruce M. Sullivan, professor of religious studies, Heidi Wayment, chair of psychology, and Meghan Warren, professor of physical therapy, as co-investigators on a recently funded grant titled "The Buddhist Health Study: Phase I of an Interdisciplinary Research Model." They will develop an interdisciplinary model for research on spirituality/religion and health among practitioners of non-Christian religions. Phase I will include a web-based survey of the relationship between spirituality/religion and health among practitioners of Buddhism in the United States.

  • Seven NAU art students won awards in the NAU Art Museum's Fine Arts Student Exhibition. Tristyn Bustamante won best of ceramics for the piece "Three Bowls," Justin Powell won best of printmaking for "Cat and Mouse," Alan Wilson won best of sculpture for "Epoch," J. Star Yaroley won best of jewelry for "Lifeline 32," and J. Bringhurst Wells won best of painting for "A Pretty Painting of an Ugly Issue." Each winner received $50. Leancy Rupert won best of show for his sclupture "Bondage of Self" and received $100.
