NAU students receive
$7K scholarships

Penny Emerson, a 1981 graduate of the NAU School of Health Professions and a board member of the NAU Institute for Native Americans, has awarded $14,000 in scholarship money to two current NAU students.

Senior nursing student Vachera Yazzie and senior health professions student Amber Ashley both received $7,000 for a field study course in Kenya this summer.

"My mother was a nurse with the Indian Health Service for 34 years," Emerson said. "Through her I understood just how important health was. On the Navajo Reservation, there is a shortage of nurses. I am Navajo myself, and I feel it's very important to give back."

For five weeks in June and July, Yazzie and Ashley will be observing and collecting data about public and environmental health in the indigenous Maasai community. NAU has teamed up with Boston University, Moi University in Kenya and the School for field studies addressing the health issues faced by the Maasai people.
