NAU again ranks as a top university
for Latinos

Northern Arizona University moved up several spots in the annual rankings for the nation's top institutions for Latinos, according to the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine.

In its May 7 edition, Hispanic Outlook ranks NAU 14th in the nation for graduating Latinos with master's degrees—up one spot over last year's report—and 62nd for undergraduates, which is up six spots over last year.

For granting doctoral degrees to Latinos, NAU ranks 72nd in the nation.

The magazine further analyzes degrees awarded to Latinos by academic program, and for the second year in a row, NAU ranked ninth in the nation for bachelor's degrees in education.

"NAU holds the issue of diversity and equity central to its mission and institutional practices," said David Camacho, special assistant to the president and associate vice president of Diversity and Equity, adding that the latest rankings again reflect NAU's ongoing commitment to the Latino community. "It is through campuswide efforts that we are preparing an underrepresented student population for success."

The rankings were derived from 2006 data gathered by the National Center for Education Statistics, which points to a continuing upward surge of Latinos earning their college degrees.

Hispanic Outlook reported its current Top 100 colleges and universities collectively granted 59,299 bachelor's degrees and 17,388 master's degrees to Latinos.
