- Mary I. Dereshiwsky, associate professor of educational leadership, had an article, "How an Assistant Can Help Maximize Your Online Efficiency," published in the March/April 2007 issue of LERN Magazine, published by the Learning Resources Network.
- Joseph Martin, associate professor of educational leadership, presented a paper "School board accountability and relations with superintendents in American Indian schools," at the National School Board Association annual conference April 14-17.
- Richard Quartaroli, Cline Library special collections librarian, presented "The Influence of George Eastman and the Use of Kodak Equipment on Early 20th Century Artists and Hopi Ceremonial Sensitivity" at the Arizona-New Mexico Joint History Convention, Pinetop-Lakeside, Ariz., April 27. The Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University supported the research for this talk with a fellowship for travel to the George Eastman House in Rochester, N.Y.
- Martin D. Sommerness, professor of journalism, presented "OOOY . . . LENGWIDGE-George Herriman: the Media Mind Behind Krazy Kat," at the 49th annual conference of the Western Social Science Association in Calgary, Alberta, Canada April 11-14. The paper was about the Krazy Kat comic strip, set in Coconino County. The strip was syndicated in newspapers nationally for three decades during the early 20th century.
- Jen Tsonis, a forestry major who works for the Ecological Restoration Institute, was named NAU Student Employee of the Year at the annual student worker and supervisor recognition ceremony hosted by the Office of Financial Aid office on April 12. Speech Communication major Robert Mack of Cline Library was runner-up for the award. Student workers are nominated by their supervisors for their professionalism, proven ability to work as part of a team, and for their outstanding contributions to their departments and to the NAU community.
Also at the ceremony, John Nauman, lab manager for the chemistry department, received the Supervisor of the Year Award. Amy Whipple, assistant research professor in the biology department, was runner-up for the award. Supervisors are nominated for the way they communicate expectations, unique ways in which they train their employees and the valuable experience they offer. Communication, mentoring and communication skills are also on the list.
- The College Newspaper Business & Advertising Managers, Inc. presented five awards to NAU's student-run newspaper, The Lumberjack, including Ad Manager of the Year for senior public relations and advertising major Nicole Heinicke.
The Lumberjack also received awards for:
- Best Newspaper Promotion Ad (Black and White)
- First Place, Best Classified Group Promotion
- Second Place, Best Display Ad Campaign
- Third Place, Best Display Ad (Color)
The CNBAM is a national organization that annually recognizes collegiate publications' advertising and creative efforts.
Steve Saville, business development director for The Lumberjack, called the awards significant. "They had never heard of Northern Arizona University before, but I guarantee you they definitely know who we are now," he said.
- Gail Westerlund, management analyst, and Tom Carpenter, associate director of the Graduate College, gave a presentation titled, "Merging and Customizing Your Graduate Online Application," at the annual convention of the National Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals in Orlando on April 25.
- J. Judson Wynne, cave research scientist and NAU doctoral student in biology, was recently featured in Astrobiology Magazine for his research on thermal detection of caves with NASA Spaceward Bound! Mojave Expedition. He was sampling caves using a thermal imaging camera via a hot air balloon.
