Lomong takes first place in 1500-meter final at West Region Championship

Lumberjack sophomore Lopez Lomong, one of the top distance runners in the nation, won the 1500-meter race at the NCAA West Region Championships on May 26, automatically qualifying for the NCAA championships in Sacramento, Calif., June 6-9.

Five Lumberjacks, including Lomong, will compete in the NCAA national track and field championships: junior thrower Candice Bryant, senior distance runner Nicole Gueldemeister, senior jumper Britney Rogers and senior distance runner Katja Rosenplaenter.

Lomong was featured in today's New York Times.

NAU wins Big Sky Men's All-Sports Trophy

Northern Arizona University men's teams have captured the Big Sky Conference All-Sports Trophy for the 2006-07 season.

The All-Sports Trophy awards schools for overall athletic excellence.

Schools are awarded points based on team finish in regular-season standings and by virtue of the finish at the Big Sky Championship. Teams are ranked according to average points per sport.

NAU men's teams finished with 77.5 total points for an average of 12.9 points per sport. The Lumberjacks claimed the men's outdoor track and field championship, tied for first in regular-season basketball and took second in cross country.

Weber State claimed the Women's All-Sports Trophy.
