- Jim Mead, geology professor, has been named a research associate for the Department of Terrestrial Vertebrates at the Western Australian Museum in Perth, Australia. Mead said the appointment provides him with access to state resources and allows him to continue work on modern and fossil lizards of Australia.
- The Arizona Senate confirmed Gov. Janet Napolitano's appointment of Lon Owen, professor of biological sciences, to the Arizona Biomedical Research Commission. The commission is reviewing more than 130 scientific proposals for funding. Last year the ABRC awarded more than $2.2 million in new funding, and an additional $5 million in continued funding.
Napolitano also appointed Owen to the board of directors of the Translational Genomics Institute.
- The Lumberjack student newspaper won three first place awards in the Society of Professional Journalists 2006 Mark of Excellence Awards for the Western Region, and placed in six categories overall.
The first place winners were Thomas Keating, who graduated in December with a degree in journalism. He won first place for editorial writing. Wes Saxton, a senior visual communication major, won in the Editorial Cartooning category. Amy Martin, who graduated in December with a degree in photography, won in the General News Photography category for her image, "Proposed immigration
laws ignite fiery protests." All three will advance to the national round of judging.
The Lumberjack also placed in three other categories:
- Feature Photography (second place): Jeffrey Murray for "In the Ring." Murray earned his bachelor's degree in photography last spring.
- General Column Writing (third place): English major Patrice Farrell
- Sports Column Writing (third place): Thomas Keating, "TKO"
The winners were selected out of more than 3,300 entries in 39 categories across 12 regions.
