Performance appraisal changes: What should we be doing?

Classified staff and service professional employees and supervisors should be attending training, meeting to review the new appraisal form and collaborating to make sure the job functions, standards and goals are recorded on the new form.

Key steps that should be happening now:

  • Supervisors and employees should review the section of the new form that outlines expected behaviors. All classified staff and service professional employees will be assessed on these behaviors.
  • Write job functions and standards on the new form. These can be transferred from the job description or the old appraisal. Supervisors and employees should discuss and confirm that all job functions are still applicable.
  • Establish goals for the appraisal period from now though June 2008. Goals need to be clearly outlined on the new appraisal form. Some goals may continue from the last appraisal and some may be new based on departmental goals now established. All should be clearly written with specific, measurable outcomes and milestones that will indicate that progress is being made.

Information on training, goal writing, timelines and forms is available online.
