Police looking for owners of stolen bikes

A joint investigation between the NAU and Flagstaff police departments has recovered a number of stolen bicycles, but finding the rightful owners has been slowed because some of the victims don't have serial number recorded or have never reported the theft.

NAUPD Sgt. Melissa Freshour said one subject has been charged for trafficking in stolen property for selling a stolen bike to a local pawn shop. Police are seeking additional victims.

"Students, faculty and staff should save serial numbers on personal items and register their bicycle with the Flagstaff Police Department—it only costs a $1," Freshour said. "The city registry would serve as proof of ownership if the bike were ever stolen."

She also reminded the campus to report crimes to the NAUPD. "If you had a bike stolen but did not make a report, it's not too late. You can still file a report," Freshour said.
