NAU's signature building, the Applied Research and Development building, is already racking up awards and its official opening isn't until September. The building was awarded the 2007 Excellence in Structural Engineering Award from the Structural Engineers Association of Arizona. The award was presented to Schneider and Associates, NAU's structural engineering consultants.
- Thomas McPoil, Regents' Professor in rehabilitation sciences, recently received the American Physical Therapy Association's 2007 Catherine Worthingham Fellow Award, which recognizes those whose work has resulted in lasting and significant advances in the science, education and practice of the physical therapy profession. McPoil was honored during an awards ceremony at the association's annual conference last month in Denver.
- Pam Stephens, assistant professor in the School of Art, recently received a silver medal at the Houston International Film Festival for Dropping in on Andy Warhol, an animated art history video for children. The video shows the life of Andy Warhol and gives insight into the creative inspiration for his masterworks.
- Dennis C. Tanner of the Department of Health Sciences presented a paper at the fifth International Conference on Computing, Communications and Control Technologies on July 14 in Orlando, Fla. The peer-reviewed paper, co-authored by Matt Tanner of the Sedona Police Department, was titled, "Theoretical Considerations in Creating Comprehensive Computerized Speaker Profiling." In the paper, the authors provide the foundation for speaker profiling including voice prints, voice stress analysis, accent-dialect analysis, intoxication detection, and forensic interviews-interrogations. The conference was jointly held with the fourth International Conference on Cybernetics and Information Technologies, Systems, and Applications.
- Mary I. Dereshiwsky, associate professor of educational leadership, had an article, "How to Facilitate Group Work Online," published in the June issue of E-LERN, the monthly newsletter of the Learning Resources Network.
