NAU sustains creativity at local teaching conference

NAU will have a strong presence at Coconino Community College's Teaching and Learning Conference at its Lone Tree campus on Aug. 16 and 17.

This year's conference theme is "Transforming Learning into Action: Sustainable Initiatives in Higher Education."

Sandra Lubarsky, founding director of NAU's Master of Liberal Studies program, is the conference's keynote speaker. She will discuss strategies for producing students who can think critically, creatively and constructively in her talk, "Life-Affirming Education."

"The conference offers a remarkable forum for the exchange of ideas on how to put sustainable education into practice," Lubarsky said. "This kind of gathering can be instrumental in extending and enhancing education so that it is relevant to the challenges of living sustainably."

A number of NAU representatives will speak at the conference.

The college also is hosting a Community Sustainability Expo from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Aug. 17, and a Luscious Local Foods Feast from 6 to 9 p.m., that same day. Cost for the feast is $25. You don't have to be registered for the conference to attend these events.

All conference events take place at the Lone Tree campus at 2800 S. Lone Tree Road in Flagstaff.

Cost for the two-day conference is $75. The deadline to register is Thursday, Aug. 9. For information or to register, call (928) 226-4380 or go to www.coconino.edu.
