New faculty geared up to inspire students A record-breaking 96 new faculty members joined the Northern Arizona University family this semester. "You're joining us at an incredible time," said President John Haeger during an Aug. 21 new faculty reception. "Between our new buildings and new programs, we are capturing the attention of the state. We welcome your presence and ideas, and we hope you steer us in new directions." Attracted by NAU's reputation for being able to provide personal attention to students, as well as its beautiful location, the new faculty is primed for classes to begin Aug. 27. Jennifer Russell, a visiting assistant professor in music theory from the University of Oregon said, "I was already attracted to the area as far as the environment, climate and friendliness of the hiring committee, but what was most appealing was that the committee was very interested in the quality of teaching I could provide." NAU's values and reputation for leading-edge research lured Cathy Klock, an assistant professor in electrical engineering and biological sciences. "I am here because of NAU's values and I felt very wanted here," Klock said. "It is exciting to have the opportunity to collaborate with electrical engineers and biomedical engineers." Ericson Friginal, a lecturer in literary technology and professional writing in Distance Learning, is teaching all online classes and wanted to be at NAU because the "Applied Linguistics program is internationally recognized," he said. "NAU also has a great support system." |
