first production of the season

Mark Dunn's comedy Belles, directed by NAU theater professor Mac Groves, will ring in the 2007-08 theater season Oct. 5 at Northern Arizona University.

The play, set in two acts and 45 phone calls, involves the six Walker sisters who originally hail from Memphis but are now scattered throughout the country. Peggy still lives in Memphis, where she cares for Mama. When the play begins, Peggy is phoning her sisters to tell them that Mama is in the hospital—nothing serious, she just ate some bad tuna.

Belles is a funny, bittersweet comedy of the deep connection of sisters that shape our lives in ridiculous, profound and heartfelt ways. Southern writer Dunn uses the long-distance telephone call to point out the hilarity and love deeply rooted in one Southern family.

Costume design is by Bria Sherinian, theater minor. The scenery is by Patrick Battles, assistant professor of theater and lighting is by theater student Megan Mane.

The play will be performed in the NAU Studio Theatre, located in the Performing Arts building, next to the Cline Library.

Belles performance dates are Oct. 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12 and 13. Curtain is at 8 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Oct. 6 and 7. For tickets call the NAU Central Box office at (928) 523-5661.

Eugene Ionesco's Rhinoceros will debut Oct. 30, followed by The Cripple of Inishmaan, by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, on Nov. 9.
