Assignment Earth Day

Show your love for Mother Earth during NAU's Earth Day celebrations.

From noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 19, NAU's Society of Environmental Communicators will host a diverse lineup of events on the First Amendment Plaza at the School of Communication.

Another Saturday event will feature an evening concert, arts and crafts sale and sustainability presentations beginning at 6 p.m. in the Cline Library Assembly Hall.

And on the official Earth Day, April 22, two energy-efficient hybrid buses will provide shuttle service on campus, along with NAU's Mountain Campus Transit System.

Celebration on the plaza

At First Amendment Plaza, the Earth Day celebration will feature free food, a book exchange, a raffle of prizes, T-shirts for sale, three-hole disc golf games, an "information fest" featuring sustainability awareness and hours of live musical entertainment. KJACK radio station will broadcast the live band performances.

From 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., a mass of bikes will swarm the area with riders equipped with whistles and megaphones, promoting bicycles and NAU's Yellow Bike Program as alternative forms of transportation.

"It is important to educate students about the environment and to push NAU to become a more sustainable university," said Carolyn Myren, an environmental science major and president for NAU's Society of Environmental Communicators.

Musical performances will draw people to the plaza. Bands include Brothers Gow; Fusion; Egress; Boy Named Sioux; Phantom Vibration; What Laura Says Thinks and Feels; Tryst; Crusher Sound System and Attack of the Giant Squid.

Events continue into night

"An Earth Day for the Indigenous Connections to the Environment" concert, arts and crafts sale, and sustainability presentations will start at 6 p.m. in NAU's Cline Library Assembly Hall. Suggested cost is $5, which will benefit Navajo Nation educational environmental projects.

The event will feature a concert by Ray Rossi, a local blues musician and historian, who will open for Becky White and the Secret Mission, a California band specializing in music promoting a global movement based in social and earth justice.
