Northern Arizona University's spring 2008 commencement ceremonies will be webcast at http://webcast.tv.nau.edu/grad/ and will be broadcast live on NPG Cable Channel 4 and University House Channel 9411 on the Dish Network.

NAU to graduate 2,650
during spring ceremonies

Northern Arizona University's spring commencement will see more than 2,650 students receive their degrees May 9 and 10 in Flagstaff and May 16 in Yuma.

Four ceremonies are planned in the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff.

Students from the College of Health and Human Services and The W.A. Franke College of Business will be honored beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, May 9. At 2 p.m. May 9, College of Education graduates will be honored.

The College of Arts and Letters, the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences and the School of Forestry will celebrate beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10. The ceremony for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and for the Graduate College's Master of Administration will begin at 2 p.m. May 10.

About 190 graduates from NAU-Yuma will hold their commencement beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, May 16, at Veterans Memorial Stadium, 7150 E. 24th St. The ceremony will be held in conjunction with Arizona Western College.

Three individuals who have been long-time supporters of education, including the 2008 Arizona Teacher of the Year, will receive honorary degrees and address the graduates in Flagstaff.

Robert Kelty, a second- and third-grade teacher at Puente de Hozho Elementary School in Flagstaff, will speak to the graduating class from the College of Education.

Kelty, who is working on a doctoral degree from NAU and has degrees from Louisiana State and the University of New Mexico, is the 2008 Arizona Teacher of the Year, selected by the Arizona Educational Foundation.

William A. Franke, managing partner of Indigo Partners and Newbridge Latin America, will address graduates from the Franke College of Business, which was renamed in his honor following Franke's $25 million gift to the university in May 2007.

One of Arizona's most prominent business leaders, Franke is former CEO of America West Airlines, Circle K and Southwest Forest Industries. He also is former owner of KNAZ-TV Channel 2 in Flagstaff.

An NAU chemistry professor since 1967, John Wettaw also served for 28 years in the Arizona Legislature, where he was a vigorous proponent of education and northern Arizona.

He will address the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences as well as the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Master of Administration graduates.

In 2001 the John F. Wettaw Biology and Biochemistry building was dedicated in his honor.
