Noted Native author, filmmaker to speak on campus

Famous Native American writer Sherman Alexie will share his humor and cultural insight with campus.

Alexie, a Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian, will present "Without Reservations: An Urban Indian's Comic, Poetic and Highly Irrelevant Look at the World," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in Ardrey Auditorium.

Born and raised in Washington on the Spokane Indian Reservation, Alexie is known for writing the screenplay for the 1998 movie Smoke Signals and more than 20 books of fiction and poetry.

This "Voices to be Heard" free event is part of the NAU Speaker Series and will include a booksigning. Tickets are required and are available through NAU's Central Ticket Office at (928) 523-5661.

The Business of Fancydancing, a 2002 film written and directed by Alexie, is being shown for free at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, in the Cline Library Assembly Hall as part of the Native American Film Series. The film tells the story of Seymour Polatkin, a successful, gay Indian poet from Spokane, who confronts his past when he returns to his childhood home on the reservation for a friend’s funeral.
