Black History Month concludes
with celebration, poetry

Help celebrate NAU’s Black History Month during closing ceremonies at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, in the NAU Fieldhouse.

Co-sponsored by the Black Student Union and the Office of Residence Life, the celebration features a barbecue and activities such as games, dancing and contests. Campus and the public are invited to this free event.

An Evening of Poetry with Nikki Giovanni
Poet Nikki Giovanni will share her poetry and thoughts on NAU’s Black History Month’s theme, “From Chains to Change” at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in the du Bois Center ballroom.

Giovanni, a renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist and educator, maintains a prominent place as a strong voice of the black community. Many of her books have received honors and awards. She is a distinguished professor at Virginia Tech University. 

Most recently, Giovanni’s children's picture book Rosa, about the civil rights legend Rosa Parks, became a Caldecott Honors Book, and illustrator Bryan Collier won the Coretta Scott King award for best illustration.
