NAU earns STARS silver rating for sustainability

Northern Arizona University remains a leader in sustainability, according to the measure of a national organization committed to promoting sustainable practices in higher education.

NAU this month earned a silver rating from the Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment and Rating System. A full list of STARS ratings was recently published by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

The list is compiled from self-reported data submitted by colleges and universities across the country. NAU is one of 110 STARS charter participants and included the rating system in its Climate Action Plan 2010 as a method for tracking sustainability initiatives on campus.

NAU’s rating was based on how well it met criteria in four categories: education and outreach; operations; planning, administration and engagement; and innovation.

In a letter that accompanied the ratings submission, President John Haeger cited “the substantial and progressive sustainability work” of NAU. “The university is highly committed to driving a sustainable future and a carbon-neutral campus.”
