New parking fees take effect in August
Northern Arizona University's new parking fees, postponed a year ago by President John Haeger, will go into effect in August, increasing the cost for most employees by $30. The new full-year parking fee will be $132. The cost for a fall-only or spring-only permit will be $88 each. The "All Commuter Lot" specialty permit will be $350.
The fee increase will help meet the long-term objectives of NAU's Master Plan, which is to create a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly campus by adding green space, purchasing more shuttle buses, funding campus safety and building parking structures.
Structured parking—four-story decks placed north, central and south—could reduce the surface area of parking by 75 percent. Currently, parking lots take up 65 acres of NAU's campus—enough ground to cover the entire historic north end.
The new parking fees were approved in 2004 but postponed by the president for one year to allow employees and students to prepare for the increase. The fee will increase another $30—to $162—in 2006, to $192 in 2007 and to $222 in 2008.
At the University of Arizona, most staff members will pay $450 for 2005-06 garage parking while others will pay $235 for limited surface-lot parking.
At Arizona State University, most employees will pay about $240 for parking during 2005-06.
Beginning in mid-May, NAU employees may purchase parking decals online. Using payroll deductions—in either six or 16 pay periods—benefits-eligible employees will save money because the funds are taken from pre-tax dollars. Permit applications submitted before Aug. 1 will be mailed to your home address. If your application is received after Aug. 1, your permit may be picked up in the Parking Services office. Payroll deduction will begin Sept. 2.
New permit options will be created for motorcycles and a new student pass will be created for Park N' Ride, where students can park all day at the Skydome and ride shuttles to and from class. Additionally, an express shuttle from Skydome to the Recreation Center along San Francisco will be available.
Because of the construction of the Applied Research and Development building, the Central Commuter and Northwest Resident permits will be eliminated.
