Elizabeth Archuleta Wins 2004 Profiles of Success Hispanic Leadership Award

NAU alumna and employee Elizabeth Archuleta has received a Profiles of Success Exemplary Leadership Award by Valle del Sol, a local non-profit community-based organization. Archuleta and other Arizona Hispanic leaders were recognized for their leadership and community involvement during the organization's annual fund raiser earlier this month.

Archuleta, who has served as multicultural alumni coordinator for the NAU Office of Alumni and Constituent Relations, said, "I was honored to receive this award from one of the most outstanding Hispanic organizations in the state. Representing community and making a difference in people's lives is something that I enjoy doing very much, and I can't think of anything better than getting an award for something that you love doing. When I accepted my award I recognized NAU for providing me with an outstanding education and for supporting me in my community work. Nothing is done in isolation—this award is a reflection of our entire community and the work that we do."

Archuleta, a fourth-generation Flagstaff resident, is also a Coconino County supervisor. She is the first elected Hispanic woman to serve on the Board of Supervisors. She has brought several opportunities to the Latino community by holding numerous immigration workshops in collaboration with Centro de Ayuda, Inc. As a coordinator with NAU, she has committed many programs to Latino youth to inspire them to attain their higher education goals. She created and implemented the Hispanics Organizing for Youth for the purpose of addressing the community's problem of the high dropout rate of young Latinas by exposing 8th grade girls and their others to the world of post-secondary education.

As a leader in the Flagstaff community, Archuleta's service includes the Governor's commission on Services and Volunteerism, Arizona Association of Chicanos for Higher Education, United Way of Northern Arizona, Affordable Housing Coalition, and the Coconino County Juvenile Court Community Advisory Board. Archuleta says she believes it's her duty to give back to the people who helped her to achieve her goals.
