Northern Arizona University recognizes the challenge the state faces in addressing this year's $1 billion budget shortfall that is expected to continue into 2008-09. While the universities are not included in the hiring freeze announced by Governor Napolitano yesterday, we understand the urgency of the budget situation and our responsibility to help address it.
On Jan. 9, I asked the university leadership to review all expenditures and move forward only with those deemed essential. I am now directing each vice president to review all positions currently posted and to move forward only with those that are identified and justified as essential to the operations of the university. Since September, when the governor first asked state agencies to implement budget-saving practices, Northern Arizona University has fewer state-funded employees. We are on the right track and we must continue in this vein.
The three university presidents will be discussing the budget situation with the Arizona Board of Regents, and I will inform you of additional guidelines that may result.
Northern Arizona University has a history of exercising prudent and responsible fiscal controls, and I urge everyone to continue operating in the lean and mean fashion to which you have become accustomed.
