Newie Louie:
Lumberjacks refresh mascot, look
Northern Arizona University has introduced new logos and word marks for the athletics department, preserving the Lumberjack tradition and providing a uniform look.
The new logos will be unveiled to the public at an 11 a.m. press conference today at du Bois Center.
The marks preserve the campus tradition of using Louie the Lumberjack and the ax while incorporating the use of sage with the original school colors of blue and gold.
The marks were designed by Phoenix Design Works based in New York City, which has worked with numerous collegiate athletic departments and conferences, as well as professional sports franchises, in developing logo packages.
The marks will bring uniformity to all NAU athletic practice gear and uniforms, giving the athletics department a consistent, marketable and professional look in its external marketing efforts. The marks are also "breakable," allowing for a variety of uses.
The football helmet will debut one of the new marks Sept. 1 in the home opener for the Lumberjacks against Adams State.
To design the new Louie, NAU Athletics, University Marketing and Phoenix Design Works led a committee that included input from students, ASNAU representatives, faculty, alumni, bookstore, Collegiate Licensing Co., Skydome personnel, public affairs, student-athletes and coaches.
The new images are part of the university's overall marketing and logo redesign efforts. Collegiate Licensing Co., under contract with NAU, will manage the use and licensing of the logos.
