Travis Laird, who ran for NAU's cross country and track teams for four seasons and was a three-time All-American there, hasn't let up since finishing his eligibility last year. He has continued to train with NAU runners and has been regularly competing in races.

Line 'em up
We're not sure it's a good idea to send Larry Kentera, the fiery former Arizona State defensive coordinator and Northern Arizona head coach, over to Serbia. But since Kentera, who is of Serbian descent, is going regardless, we might as well try to help him out. "They don't have headgear and most don't have shoulder pads," he said. "They're tough kids over there." Kentera already has arranged to get shoes from NAU.

NAU ranks as a top university for Latinos
The April edition of Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education lists Northern Arizona University in the nation's top 25 institutions for graduating Latino students with master's degrees, and the May edition of the same publication puts NAU among top 100 universities for Latino undergraduates.

Cougars moving east, alarming residents
Cougars attack about five to 10 people each year in North America, said Paul Beier, a cougar expert at Northern Arizona University. There have been less than 20 known deaths over the past century, but the frequency of attacks has increased since the 1970s, he said.

Gov. Janet Napolitano formed a special commission Wednesday to study ways to improve teacher training and compensation in Arizona. Napolitano wants the panel, to be headed by Northern Arizona University President John Haeger, to train and foster the success of teachers.

Hargrave Named New Valley Sun Ad Director
Lindsey A. Hargrave, account executive and special sections manager for the Valley Sun newspapers since 2003, has been promoted to the position of advertising director. Hargrave said she knew from the beginning of her college days at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff that she wanted to pursue a career in advertising. "My first newspaper experience was with NAU's student newspaper, The Lumberjack, where I worked as an advertising sales rep and a part-time writer," she said. After graduating from NAU with a bachelor's degree in advertising, Hargrave accepted a position as an advertising sales assistant with the Arizona Daily Sun, also in Flagstaff.

Lucero Rejoins the Blitz
The Bakersfield Blitz dipped back into their 2005 Training Camp to bulk up at quarterback today, when Rich Lucero was assigned by the arenafootball2 office. The Northern Arizona University grad finished his college days in 2002, when he appeared in five games and completed nearly 60% of his passes.

Special Biotech Profile: Arizona's Bio-Corridor Beckons

Governor forms committee on teacher education
Governor Napolitano is putting Northern Arizona University President John Haeger in charge of a new committee to work on bolstering teacher education in Arizona. Haeger will serve as chairman of the governor's committee on teacher recognition, responsibility and training.

Student volunteers from around the state will be honored at Thursday's Diamondbacks home game. For their efforts, senior Nicole D'Aunoy and her blood-drive team from Bourgade Catholic High School will watch the game from a party suite. Team members donate their own blood, recruit student donors and help out during the United Blood Services drives. Nicole, 17, is from Avondale and will be attending Northern Arizona University in the fall, where she plans to study nursing.
