LAA completes successful campaign
The Lumberjack Athletic Association completed its first campaign drive April 22 with record-breaking numbers for memberships and scholarship dollars raised for the Northern Arizona University athletic department. The drive totaled 450 members, including 242 new members, and more than $311,000 pledged towards athletic scholarships.

Going green pays off
Two Arizona buildings, one at Northern Arizona University and the other at Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, are on the drawing board that would meet the platinum standard, the highest rating possible. Currently there are only four platinum buildings in the entire country.

Pruitt named CEO of local medical centers
John Pruitt has been named as CEO of both Colorado River Medical Center and Valley View Medical Center in Fort Mojave. A 24-year health care veteran, Pruitt received his Bachelor in Nursing from Northern Arizona University.

Three alumni to be inducted into Central's Hall of Excellence
A 1954 graduate of Central High School in La Crosse, WI, will be inducted into the school's Hall of Excellence. Don Bendel is a retired art teacher in Arizona who became a pioneer in art education and the development of ceramic art. At Northern Arizona University, Bendel developed the Japanese Garden Project, which brought Tozan pottery to the university. He also established the first Tozan kilns in the United States.

Battle on to get, retain qualified teachers
"We simply don't know enough about who our teachers are, how they get into the profession, why they leave the profession when they do, why we don't have more teachers in math and science and what are the most important things to know when we recruit a teacher," said John Haeger, committee chair and Northern Arizona University president.

Just Move It celebrates decade of success
Teaching people how to stay healthy and active is what Lionel Blie's job is all about. Blie graduated from Northern Arizona University with a dual degree in health promotions and education. "I think having a well-balanced, active lifestyle is important," said Blie.

Super wall art: 'This Could Be HUGE' at the Beasley
Shawn Skabelund, a part-time instructor and lecturer at the university, is donating his time and energy to this project just because he likes to see the students get enthusiastic about their art. "Because I love my students and I love working with my students. And, I love cheap art," he says. "It's a lot of hard work, but it will be a great experience for the students to deal with what it's like to put up a show and to clean up a gallery afterwards and to do all the PR for it."

Villarreal breaks two track records

Nash jersey to be auctioned off at NAU
The Phoenix Suns and Steve Nash have donated a signed jersey from the NBA's Most Valuable Player to be auctioned off Saturday at the 15th Annual Axer Auction benefiting NAU Athletics Scholarship funds at the Rolle Activity Center.

Ex-Jack Iverson earns national recognition
Former Northern Arizona defensive back Eric Iverson has been chosen as an All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), recognizing his strength training and athletic conditioning. NAU strength and conditioning coach Casey Bond nominated Iverson for the award.

It's official: N. Colorado joins Big Sky
NAU director of athletics Jim Fallis, who came to Flagstaff from the Greeley, Colo., school last May after serving for more than a decade as the Bears' athletics director, said the move to bring his former school into the fold should provide the Jacks with the golden opportunity to be seen on a broader stage. "We have a great alumni base in the Denver area that we are looking forward to playing in front of in the future," he said. "It will be interesting to see what the effect of expansion will be on the shape of the conference and additional expansion."

Back to Native American roots
Navajos reinvented their culture to include sheep, says Devon Mihesuah, a Choctaw and professor of applied indigenous studies and history at Northern Arizona University. While many Anglos think of Indian fry bread as the quintessential Native American food, fry bread is "absolutely not" traditional, Mihesuah says. "Fried bread (or more inaccurately 'fry bread') is something unhealthy created by Natives after they were introduced to wheat."

Research plumbs mysteries of N. Az seeps and springs
Finding new plants and animals, both terrestrial and aquatic, is possible all summer, said Abe Springer, an associate professor in Northern Arizona University's geology department. He and others are surveying springs across the Colorado Plateau this summer.

NAU adds depth with combo guard
Tyrone Bazy had an offer from Southern Conference power College of Charleston and drew interest from Boise State in recent weeks. But after his campus visit to Flagstaff, Bazy immediately grew to like NAU. "I feel like I fit that program really good," Bazy told TexasHoops.com. "Hopefully I can bring what I bring to the table and get them back into the tournament."[CR-LF]

NAU Athletics hosts Axer Auction
"The Axer Auction continues to be our premiere fund-raising event for the NAU Athletic Scholarship Fund," said Linda Stromberg, event director. "The silent auction includes all kinds of things -- restaurant certificates, a round of golf, movie tickets, hotel stays -- the list goes on and on," said Karen Auerbach, NAU sports information. "There's so many people in Flagstaff who give prizes for the auction."

Roads being redesigned to protect wildlife
Four major state highways in southern Arizona could be in line for new, wildlife-friendly designs in the next few years because of a $60,000 annual grant just obtained by a Paul Beier, a Northern Arizona University professor and researcher. That study will focus on how to make those and other roads in the state more hospitable to birds and mammals. Beier will study eight wildlife corridors.

As the week of commencement and celebrations of learning came to a close this year, it is important to reflect on the resource and treasure Arizona Western College and its partnership with Northern Arizona University is to Yuma and La Paz counties. Indeed AWC and NAU-Yuma make a huge difference in the lives of individuals and families.
