A Good Man
Native Tucsonan Sam Borozan was honored last week, named the 2004-05 AIA Official of the Year. It was well deserved. A member of the NAU Sports Hall of Fame, Borozan still teaches a class each fall at his alma mater.

NAU to make 3 additions to Hall of Fame
Golfer Louise Davis, basketball player Ross Land and the 1995 men's cross country team will be inducted into the Northern Arizona University Athletics Hall of Fame during festivities on Sept. 16-17.

Land highlights new NAU Hall class
Ross Land was satisfied enough with his first induction into the Northern Arizona Athletics Hall of Fame. That came last fall, when Land and his teammates from the 1997-98 men's basketball team were enshrined together. That induction was just a start for Land, who headlines the 2005 NAU Hall of Fame class, this time as an individual. Others in the class are golfer Louise Davis (women's golf 1996-99) and the 1995 men's cross country team.

Riverdeep Advisor Is Inducted Into Reading Hall of Fame
Victoria Purcell-Gates, internationally recognized reading authority and advisor on Riverdeep's Destination Reading series, is the newest member of the Reading Hall of Fame. Purcell-Gates received her B.S. in English Education from Northern Arizona University.

Shepherd becomes new undersheriff
An Arizona native, and graduate of Payson High School who worked his way up the ranks of the Gila County Sheriff's Office has been named undersheriff of Gila County. Deputy Adam Shepherd accepted the appointment handed down by Gila County Sheriff John Armer yesterday. He has been accepted to Northern Arizona University, seeking a bachelor's degree in public agency service.

Variety of Chemicals In the Environment Affect Human Reproduction
A study by Stefanie Whish, Northern Arizona University, uncovered potential reproductive implications for the Navajo Nation. Whish's hypothesis was that uranium mimics estrogen activity eliciting estrogen sensitive responses in vivo. The results suggest that uranium is estrogenic and may be an endocrine disruptor that can cause reproductive problems in the Navajo people.

Digging Up Weeds
Although it focuses on one part of the United States, the Southwest Exotic Plant Information Clearinghouse is a good general source of facts about non-native plants such as purple loosestrife that are growing amok. Sponsored by federal agencies and Northern Arizona University, the database collects backgrounders on more than 300 invasive species, from the common dandelion to the ultracompetitive medusahead grass.

Nina Santellanes Named Director of Sales and Marketing At Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa
Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa announced the appointment of Nina Santellanes to the position of director of sales and marketing. She is a 21-year veteran of the hospitality industry with a bachelor's degree in hotel management from Northern Arizona University.

Teegarden given Gold Axe Award at NAU
Cassandra Teegarden of Casa Grande was recently awarded the prestigious Gold Axe Award from Northern Arizona University. The award recognizes graduating NAU seniors who have made outstanding contributions to the university in areas of academic performance, leadership and service to the NAU community.

County residents assisting Malawi aids world peace
Lewis County residents recently helped establish the University of Livingstonia in the south African country of Malawi, the fifth poorest country in the world. Recent Northern Arizona University business graduate and Centralia resident Drew Conrad was assigned to teach at the university.

Moon Valley teacher wins award
Veronica Carlson, a math teacher at Moon Valley High School in Phoenix, has been chosen as a recipient of the 2005 Disney Teacher Award. Carlson is in her 20th year of teaching and has won numerous awards in the past, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching, the GTE GIFT Award, the Radio Shack National Teacher Award and the Distinguished Education Alumni Award from Northern Arizona University.

NAU's international outreach
NAU has donated approximately 500 pairs of athletic shoes-some shoes that remain in their original boxes, many of which date back to 1981-and an assortment of used shoulder pads, practice shirts and pants to ACDI/VOCA, a private, non-profit organization which works to promote broad-based economic growth and the development of civil society in emerging democracies and developing countries.

Our Opinion: Teachers few when schools shortchanged
Few professions can be more honorable and personally rewarding than teaching. But few also come with such low pay, long hours, administrative constraints and enormous challenges. Those surely are among the reasons Arizona is suffering a dire shortage of teachers. More reasons-and solutions-now are to be ferreted out by a governor's committee headed by John Haeger, president of Northern Arizona University.
