November 5, 2012

Dear Faculty, Staff and Administrators,

MJ McMahon has served Northern Arizona University as my executive vice president and chief of staff for more than 10 years, and NAU’s long list of accomplishments during that time are in no small part due to her tireless efforts and dedication.

For that reason, it is with pride and a degree of reluctance that I announce that MJ will step down from her position at the end of June 2013, and will serve as a consultant to her successor and fully retire at the end of that year.

MJ has extended NAU’s reach nationally, maintained a close collaboration with the Arizona Board of Regents and built closer ties to the Flagstaff community. I have relied on her insights and am grateful for her continual support.

Thankfully, Sarah Bickel, associate vice president for Student Affairs, has agreed to succeed MJ by assuming the role of vice president in July 2013. Sarah is a trusted member of NAU’s senior staff and her long academic career has prepared her well for this important duty.

I hope that you will join me in congratulating MJ for culminating her career as such a strong advocate of NAU’s success during a crucial phase in the university’s history. At the same time, please welcome Sarah as she transitions to a challenging leadership position.

This is an exciting time of institutional transformation at NAU. The entire leadership team and I appreciate your ongoing support as we all strive to make our university a premier destination for students and a great place to work for faculty and staff.

Sincerely,

John Haeger
