FALL 2007

Here are a few key reminders that the Office of Student Life would like to review with you.

  1. The online Student Handbook contains university policies that can help you be successful and answer many questions that you might have.
  2. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of education records, establishes the rights of students to inspect and review their education records, and provides guidelines for the correction of inaccurate or misleading data through informal and formal hearings. For information about FERPA, including NAU's annual notification of rights regarding education records, review Appendix A in the online Student Handbook.
  3. The "Student Code of Conduct" and the "Student Disciplinary Procedures" can also be found in the online Student Handbook. You need to be aware of the expectations the university has of you and the rights you have as a student.
  4. Northern Arizona University is committed to providing a healthy educational environment, consistent with university policies and free from unlawful acts. In addition, NAU must certify compliance with The Drug-Free Workplace Act (41 USCA 701), The Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (20 USCA 7101), and The Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Regulations (34 CFR 86). As such, the university is taking this opportunity to inform each student of the health risks, university policies, university and legal sanctions, and the prevention/intervention programs associated with alcohol and other drug abuse. The links provided here will direct you to that information. We encourage you to review these materials so that you may make educated and informed decisions related to alcohol and drugs.
  5. Students are allowed to change, edit, and/or restrict certain directory information (telephone, address, e-mail) that NAU maintains. You can do this yourself on LOUIE. Log into LOUIE and follow the "breadcrumbs" provided below:

SA Self Service>> Campus Personal Information >> Privacy Settings >> Edit FERPA/Directory Restrictions

You will be provided choices as to what information you want the university to share about you. If you restrict certain information from being released to the general public this may make it difficult for individuals to reach you. The directory information provided on LOUIE is the only official NAU directory. Other services may exist on the internet, but they are not affiliated with NAU. For security reasons, please use caution when releasing personal information to these various services.
  6. Check the following link for a list of all currently Registered Student Organizations. We hope you will review the many opportunities associated with joining a student organization.

Please let us know if you have questions or any concerns that we might be able to assist you with.
