Environmental Compliance and Inspection Program (ECI)::
The Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals offers training and technical assistance in environmental compliance issues to build the capacity of tribes to conduct effective civil inspections. This program was created under US EPA order 3600.1 in 2001 and is conducted in partnership with the National Enforcement Training Institute and the US EPA. Our courses are intended to prepare participants to conduct civil inspections under Tribal and/or US EPA authority.

From 2002 through 2005, the Environmental Compliance Inspector (ECI) training program delivered nine Tribal Basic Inspector Training courses, as well as three media specific courses focused on FIFRA inspections, one media specific course covering UIC inspections, and one media specific course dealing with NPDES inspections.
Each course features instructors from ITEP, the US EPA, and most importantly, the tribes themselves. Each course covers a variety of issues, ranging from a review of relevant statutes to pre-inspection planning, conducting effective interviews, gathering field evidence, and writing an inspection report. Classroom lectures are interspersed with several small group activities as well as a hands-on mock inspection.
Please feel free to contact either the Program Coordinator or the Technical Specialist with questions about training opportunities or other requests for assistance.
