Past Projects::
Over the years, ITEP has managed projects on a variety of topics, focused in different environmental media. Below is a summary of some of those projects. For more information, contact itep@nau.edu

  • Air Quality Training and Assistance for Alaska Native Villages
    From 2002-2007, ITEP developed and delivered a training and technical assistance program to help support tribal air quality program development and capacity building in for Alaska Native Villages. Training courses were developed in collaboration with EPA and representatives from Alaska to specifically address the air quality issues of Alaskan villages. Courses included:
    • Air Quality in Alaska Native Villages
    • Tribal Residential Indoor Air Quality
    • Basic Source Assessment and Air Quality Computations
    • Air Quality and Community Health

  • Alaska Solid Waste Training Program
    From 1999 to 2007, ITEP successfully delivered several training courses on solid waste management in Alaska. The focus of the workshops integrated legal, technical, educational, and tribal case-study materials, as well as a site-visit to a working landfill facility. Through the project, ITEP developed extensive expertise in course delivery tailored specifically to Alaska tribal issues and audiences. • Tribal Wastewater Training Center
    From 2003 to 2007, ITEP provided training and technical support to tribes on wastewater operation and maintenance procedures. In 2004, ITEP was granted the authority to offer wastewater operator certification exams to professionals who attended the training courses.

  • Water Resources Training Program
    In 2003, ITEP developed a comprehensive tribal environmental training program in Water Resources specifically for EPA Region 8 tribes. The program facilitated capacity-building for tribal water resource management and protection through training, education and professional development. The Tribal Water Resources Training Program provided training and outreach for all aspects of water quality management through August 2006.

  • Sustainable and Energy Efficient Tribal Building Program
    In 2006, ITEP was awarded a small one-year grant from the Environmental Research, Development, and Education for the New Economy (ERDENE) fund. The Sustainable and Energy Efficient Tribal Building program (SEETB) was established at ITEP, with the goal to assist Arizona tribes in their work to develop "green building" and energy efficient practices into their housing projects. ITEP staff worked to develop a "Toolkit," a set of resources Arizona tribes could use to address such issues. A special one-day workshop was developed and was attended by tribal staff as well as State and Federal partners.

  • Passive Ozone Monitoring Project
    In the Summer of 2004, ITEP collaborated with EPA Region 9 to provide training and equipment to 10 tribes in Southern California and Arizona to assess ozone impacts in their communities using passive sampling equipment. Data collected were compared to actual ozone monitoring data from the region and were used to help the tribes gain a better understanding of ozone impacts in their communities.

  • Lake Michigan Air Directors Consortium (LADCO) Emissions Inventory Assessment
    In 2002, ITEP collaborated with LADCO to assess tribal technical needs and data collection activities related to emissions inventory (EI) development. The project was designed to assist tribes with technical assistance conducting EIs and to expand and enhance the working relationship of the RPO with tribes in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Twenty-five tribes completed the assessment, the results of which are summarized in the report titled "An Assessment of Tribal Air Quality Programs in Michigan, Minnesota, & Wisconsin."
