Alaskan Solid Waste Program (AK-SW)::
Intro: Beginning in 1999, ITEP successfully delivered the Introduction to Solid Waste Management for Alaska Tribes workshops. The focus of the workshops integrated legal, technical, educational, and tribal case - study materials, as well as a site-visit to a working landfill facility. Beginning in 2003, ITEP added the Tribal Solid Waste Administration Course. The Administration course is intended to follow the Intro course and focus on critical issues for program managers, leaders and decision makers. The Administration course targets tribes that have developed a solid waste management plan. The content of the administration course includes management plan review, risk management, code/ordinance implementation, communication strategies, program administration and risk assessment. Through the workshops, ITEP has developed extensive expertise in course delivery tailored specifically to Alaska tribal issues and audiences. The Solid Waste workshops have been offered in Kotzebue, Bethel, Iliamna, Fort Yukon, Kodiak, Anchorage, Haines, Craig, Venetie, King Cove, Toksook Bay, Kalskag, Selawik, and Seldovia.

ITEP Alaskan Solid Waste Program

The purpose of this program is to increase tribal environmental management capacity in Alaska in the area of comprehensive solid waste management by providing regional tribal solid waste management planning sessions to tribal environmental specialists and technicians. The course materials include information on statutes and regulations related to solid waste management in Alaska, tribal Alaskan case studies, components of a solid waste program, funding resources, solid waste operations and maintenance, community outreach and education, source identification, site closure, waste stream analysis, and site assessment.

ITEP continues to provide training in collaboration with local organizations, Alaska Tribal Conference on Environmental Management, and Alaska Forum on the Environment. Please contact Jennifer Williams at 907/349-2163 or 928/523-0673 if you are interested in ITEP staff presenting at your solid waste training event.
