How to Register For an Air Pollution Training Institute Self-Instructional Course:
Start by visiting EPA's Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards (OAQPS) Education and Outreach group's website at: www.epa.gov/oar/oaqps/eog/

Registering for the self-instructional courses just allows you to receive the course materials, usually a manual. "You do not have to complete the course just because you are registered." By registering you will get the course manuals, which you may keep to read and use whenever you like. Most of the manuals are excellent reference documents. If you do wish to complete the course and receive CEU credits, you complete any tests or exams included in the course materials and fax the answer sheets to APTI. If you get a score of 70% or better, you will receive CEU credits. You can take the tests at any time after you are registered for a course.

Click on the Air Pollution Training Institute's "Self-Instructional Courses" at www.epa.gov/oar/oaqps/eog/catalog/catsic.html

On the Self-Instructional Courses web-page, you can view a list of all of the courses offered, click on the titles to get more detailed descriptions, and get the "class locator number" for each course, which you will need to register for the course.

Tribal air pollution control agencies must register through the APTI Registrar using the APTI application. There is no fee for the courses for tribal air employees. To register, click on the "Application Form" link on the Self-Instructional Courses web-page. This will direct you to a web-page where you can access and print out both of the forms and their instruction sheets.

If you have never registered for an APTI course before, you will need to fill out two forms, the "Application for Training Form" and the "Class Registration Form." If you have registered for APTI courses before, you will only need to fill out the "Class Registration Form" and include the PIN number that you chose when you filled out the Application for Training Form. The first time you register, you can fax both the "Application for Training Form" and the "Class Registration Form" at the same time.

When filling out the "Application for Training Form" follow the instructions given by APTI, as found on the website. As a tribal employee, mark "not applicable" in the "Payment Method" section.

For each Self-Instructional Class that you wish to take, you need to fill out a separate "Class Registration Form." Follow the instructions given on the form, you will not need to fill out the "Site Location Code." Do fill in the "Class Locator Number" that you found on the Self-Instructional Courses web-page, to the right of the course title. Fill out a separate "Class Registration Form" for each course that you want to get the manuals for. APTI has not yet set a limit on the number of courses that you can register for.

Fax the forms to 919/541-5598. APTI has changed their fax number recently so this number may be different than the one given on the forms.

In the past, APTI has not sent out any confirmation that you have been accepted to the course. You may receive an email saying that your registration has been accepted, or that you are on a waiting list. APTI has been in a state of change lately, and don't seem to have a consistent way of replying to registrants. You should receive your course materials in the mail in the three to six weeks. If you don't receive anything, call the registrar at the number given on their website to ask what's going on. Always mention that you work for a tribe to make sure that you get the correct registrar.

Please call us if you have difficulty with these instructions or with APTI, we will do what we can to help.

Thank-you and happy self-instruction!
