ITEP Technology - Data Security

In order to respect each tribe's concerns about confidentiality of information, any individual, tribe, or other entity that wishes to obtain data housed within ITEP and/or the TAMS Center shall be referred to the original owner of the data (usually the tribe). Each owner will then approve or deny access by providing, in writing, permission to release the requested data.

The Clearinghouse shall maintain its databases on a stand-alone computer. The stand-alone format will provide a high level of security, protecting data from potential corruption, unauthorized access, and other accidental damage or misuse. Additional security shall be maintained by limiting the number of people with access to the database server to Clearinghouse staff. Data shall be made available and distributed as needed and appropriate.

ITEP shall make every effort to internally coordinate information gathering in order to minimize the number of requests made to individual tribes. Specific ITEP staff are assigned to gather information in order to insure internal quality control and consistency as well as to minimize the number of ITEP staff handling data. All ITEP staff engaged in information gathering shall receive basic training and instruction in ITEP’s privacy policy and working with tribes/respecting tribal protocols.

Data housed at ITEP may be released in aggregate form in reports or other documents. Data identifying individual tribes or people shall only be released subject to the policy described above.
