Course Description:
This course will present techniques for analyzing and interpreting ambient air quality data. Participants will learn approaches for addressing questions like: "Is my air quality getting better or worse?" "Should I believe this valid but unusual observation?" "Does my air quality look like my neighbor's?" Practical exercises will teach participants how to present data in both technical summary form and for public review in a way that communicates essential facts accurately.

Topics include:

  • Data attributes

  • Uncertainty (sampling error, measurement error)

  • Detection limits (field sampling, analysis method)

  • Exploratory data analysis (graphing data in various ways)

  • Summary statistics

  • Confidence intervals

  • Student's t-distribution and associated tests

  • Parametric and nonparametric tests

  • Presentation of data for a community meeting and in a technical report (for a proposal)

Who Should Attend:
This course is designed for tribal environmental professionals who have been managing air monitoring or meteorological data and are interested in statistical analysis and interpretation of their data. This is an advanced course; applicants should have completed ITEP's Air Monitoring Data Management course prior to attending.

Course Structure and Approach:
This course will include extensive hands-on computer exercises and activities as well as lectures. Participants will be expected to have an intermediate-level working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and will be asked to bring copies of recent data sets for use during class activities.
