Course Description:
This entry-level course is designed to provide an understanding of common indoor air quality (IAQ) problems in Alaska Native Villages. Included will be an overview of indoor air pollutants and their health effects, an overview of IAQ assessment in homes and schools, and tips for solving IAQ problems. There will be hands-on practice with a comprehensive assessment tool used to identify IAQ problems.

Topics include:

  • Common indoor air pollutants found in village homes and schools

  • Health effects of indoor air pollutants

  • Fundamentals of building science

  • Comprehensive assessment tool for identifying IAQ problems

  • Investigative methods focusing on ventilation, moisture/mold, and combustion contaminants in village homes

  • Monitoring and/or measuring devices for selected indoor air pollutants

  • Report-writing and record-keeping

  • Identifying external resources for IAQ investigation and remediation

  • Inexpensive solutions to IAQ problems

  • Outreach: prevention of IAQ problems

Who Should Attend:
There is no prerequisite for this course. It is open to village staff from environmental, housing, or health departments. Preference will be given to applicants who have an indoor air quality task in a grant work plan.

Course Structure and Approach:
This course will consist of lectures, demonstration, small-group activities, and a village case study.
