Lesson 16 - EPA Models Overview

16.2 U.S. EPA's LandGEM Model

The LandGEM model is used for estimating air pollutant emissions from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills. LandGEM can be used to estimate emission rates for methane, carbon dioxide, nonmethane organic compounds, and individual air pollutants from landfills.

LandGEM is also included on your TEISS Installation CD, you can install it on your computer from there. If you plan to use LandGEM, we strongly recommend that you read the User's Manual that is available on the EPA website at: www.epa.gov/ttncatc1/dir1/landgem-v302-guide.pdf. The LandGEM User's Manual is also included on the TEISS Installation CD. While LandGEM is included on your TEISS CD, it is a separate program and must be run outside of TEISS.

		

TEISS Exercise TEISS Exercise: Using LandGEM
The following exercise will step you through how to use LandGEM and import the results into TEISS. If you have any questions regarding how LandGEM works or any issues with its operation please refer to the EPA website.

Step 1: Start the LandGEM application. Select File | New from the menu.

		
		
		
		

Step 2: The Operating Parameters window is displayed. Specify the following parameters:

  • Year Opened: 1994

  • Current Year: 2004

  • Capacity: 10,000,000 Mg

		
		
		
		

Step 3: Click on the Acceptance Rate option () and select the Acceptance Rate cell for year 1994 as seen in picture below.

		
		
		
		

Step 4: Specify 500,000 Mg in the Waste Value field and click on the Acceptance Rate option () again. Note that the 500,000 Mg (5.000000E+05) was specified for the 1994 Acceptance Rate.

		
		
		
		

Step 5: Now select the 2003 Acceptance Rate cell and type 500,000 Mg in the Waste Value field. Click on the Acceptance Rate option () again. Note that the 500,000 Mg (5.000000E+05) was written to the Acceptance Rate cell for the year 2003.

		
		
		
		

Step 6: Pressing down the mouse left button, select the Acceptance Rate cells from year 1994 to 2003. Select Edit | Autocalc from the menu. This option will automatically fill values between years 1994 and 2003.

		
		
		
		

The Autocalc function allows the user to linearly interpolate Acceptance Rate or Refuse in Place between years. Because we have the same value for the beginning year and ending year, the Autocalc in this case will apply equal values for all year.

		
		
		
		

Step 7: Select Defaults | AP-42 from the menu to use AP-42 default parameters.

		
		
		
		

Step 8: Select File | Save As to save your current project.

		
		
		
		

Step 9: Select Reports | Text from the menu. The Selected and Emitted Substance dialog is displayed. Select Methane (CH4) and press OK.

		
		
		
		

Step 10: The Text Report window is displayed. Select File | Save As from the main menu and save the text results for Methane to a file (e.g., Methane.txt). Repeat these steps for each substance that you want results to be imported into TEISS View.

		
		
		
		

Once you have run LandGEM outside of TEISS, launch TEISS and open the outline view. Enter your landfill source in as a regular point source. When you come to the Emission Period data entry screen go to the Estimate tab, then click on Add and Execute.

		
		
		
		

Click the OK button to launch LandGEM View. After clicking OK on the opening screen, click first on the Add Files button, which will open a browse window to allow you to select the output text file you created in LandGEM. When you select the text file, it will automatically fill in the Model and Landfill Parameters in this window.

		
		
		
		

After you have added the file, click on the Export button. This will cause the Emission Import Options window to open. Click on the Import button to import the result into your TEISS project outline. You will have to repeat this operation for each pollutant that you want to import to your TEISS project. TEISS can only import one pollutant's emissions at a time.
