Lesson 4 - Inventory Preparation Plans (IPP)

4.1 - Why plan for an EI?

Because you do not waste your time! Through planning your EI, you figure out the most efficient way to collect, enter and quality assure/quality control (QA\QC) your data. During your planning process, you may find that it is impossible or too expensive to collect good information on certain source types you wanted to include in your EI. You may have to skip those sources this time around and try to address it in an update later.

The more time you spend planning your work, the less likely you are to make mistakes and miscalculations later in the process. You want your EI to be the best it can be, because:

  • Emissions inventories are the foundation of many decisions.

  • Mistakes early in the process interject errors in downstream calculations.

  • Redoing work is costly and embarrassing.

Through planning, you want to anticipate all the steps you will need to take and determine if you have enough resources (time and funding) to complete those steps.
