Lesson 5 - Geographic Data Introduction

This section introduces geographic information systems (GIS) and geographic data. The main TEISS interface is a GIS. The TEISS GIS interface makes it easier to identify the geographic area covered by your EI and provide locations for point sources you include in your inventory. If you plan to import geographic data from other sources in to TEISS, it is important that you understand the information provided in this lesson.

Learning objectives for this session:

  • Describe what geographic data is.

  • Understand coordinate systems.

  • Describe what a layer of information is on a GIS base map.

  • Describe why it is important to know the projection and datum of geographical data sets.
