Course: Addressing and Managing Illegal Dumps in Indian Country

Course Description:
This course will provide guiding principles in the identification, regulation, and elimination of illegal dumps on tribal lands. The course is designed for staff in the environmental, utility, and administrative fields.

Course Content:

  • Discussion of solid waste and illegal dumping challenges by participants

  • Federal laws and their relation and application to illegal dumping in Indian Country

  • The role of tribal codes and ordinances in dealing with illegal dumping

  • Prevention and public outreach strategies

  • Field activities and site assessments

  • Open dump surveys and the wSTARS system

  • Tribal compliance assistance and enforcement

  • Dump closure considerations

  • Funding and sustainability of illegal dump remediation strategies

  • Tribal case studies and discussions

  • Small group activities


Participant Eligibility:
Applicants must be employed by a federally recognized tribe. The course is specifically developed for staff employed in all aspects of solid waste management.

Course Fees:
There are no tuition or registration fees required. ITEP will pay for lodging (room and taxes only) expenses and reimburse per diem (at the rate established by Northern Arizona University) for up to 20 participants. Participants are responsible for their own travel costs.
