DHCP For Windows XP | ||
| Follow these steps to set up a Windows XP system to use DHCP. | |||
|
To switch to DHCP you must first register the computer's
MAC address and host name with the DHCP
server. This must be done by calling the Solution Center at 523-1511.
If your department has a domain server an account should be created on that
server so you can login to the NAU domain through your local server, if it does
not then your computer's host name must be registered in Active Directory. The
Solution Center can register the host name in the departmental domain or Active
Directory. ONLY IF THIS IS A NEW COMPUTER should you register
the machine yourself. This is easily done by filling in the self-registration
web form.
This form registers your computer on the network and assigns it a proper Host
Name. Once you have completed the registration process, proceed as follows: Setting up DHCP for Windows XP Go to the START button. Choose SETTINGS. Choose NETWORK CONNECTIONS.
Double click on Local Area Connection.
Click on Properties.
Choose
Obtain an IP address automatically, and Obtain DNS
server address automatically. The
following pictures show a typical setup. These
tabs are available when you click on the Advanced button.
Make
sure to uncheck the box for Register this connection’s addresses
in DNS.
Click
OK to exit out of these windows and save your changes. The following steps show
you how to enter the host name. NOTE: All computers must have an account on the NAU domain in the appropriate department's Organizational Unit (OU). If an account has not been created, you can request an account be added to an OU by calling the Solution Center at 523-1511. Once you are sure you have a computer account in the OU, proceed with the next steps. IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THE ADMINISTRATOR PASSWORD ON THE MACHINE BEFORE PROCEEDING. Right click the My Computer icon. Choose Properties. Click on the Computer Name tab.
This
displays the Full computer name (host name) and the Domain or Workgroup
that the computer logs in through. It
may have Workgroup instead of Domain if this information is being entered for
the first time.
Click
on the More… button to change the DNS suffix if it is
incorrect or missing.
**Make sure to uncheck
the Change primary DNS suffix when domain membership changes. Reboot
the computer. Now you will join the
computer to the NAU domain. Change
the Member of to Domain. Type in NAU.FROOT.NAU.EDU.
You'll be prompted to put in a username and password. Enter your domain account information. The user name needs to be put in as NAU\domain_username. After about 30 seconds you will be welcomed to the NAU domain. Click OK to close each of the windows. You will be prompted to reboot the computer for the changes to take effect. REBOOT. You should now be able to log into the NAU
domain. | |||
