Training News: Microsoft Office 2007
The Information Systems Technology Training (ISTT) team is preparing training for the planned ITS rollout of Microsoft Office 2007 in September. Our training offerings will take many forms to allow NAU faculty and staff to familiarize themselves with Office 2007 according to individual needs and learning preferences. In the fall semester, ISTT will focus on the four primary Office applications of Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. We plan to add additional Office applications in 2008 according to faculty and staff requests and available ISTT resources.
For those who feel comfortable with Office and simply want a quick online orientation to the new features and layout of Office 2007, ISTT will produce a “What’s New” series of video tutorials to quickly familiarize users with Office 2007 and get you on your way without taking a lot of your time. These tutorials will be available anywhere there is a broadband Internet connection and should be released in the third week of September.
For end users who would like to participate in instructor-led training on any one of the four main Office applications, ISTT is planning a series of courses in our labs beginning in October and ending in January. We plan to teach four levels for each of the applications that will include beginning, intermediate, advanced, and expert. Since teaching these courses is very resource intensive, the current plan is to teach them extensively in the fall semester, and then rely more on self-study, tutorials, and our Open Lab after the New Year. If you would like formal instructor-led training, please set aside time now to attend class with us this fall. The ISTT website (www.nau.edu/its/istt) and mailed flyer will have more information about course times and dates.
For the self-sufficient end user who wants the full training but may not have the time to attend one of our instructor-led trainings, ISTT will offer a couple of ways for you to do self-study. In September we will post online materials that can be used for self-training or as a quick reference, and we also plan to post downloadable quick reference guides for each of the Office applications. Another option that we plan to make available is to provide courseware for the instructor-led courses if you would like to work on your own instead of attending the class. Finally, ISTT will purchase the new Keystone Office 2007 training videos on DVD that can be used by appointment in our Open Lab.
The ISTT Open Lab will begin again in September in the South Learning Resource Center. The Open Lab is set up as a place where NAU employees can get away from their offices to quietly view one of our many computer-based training topics or to receive some one-on-one help for an ITS-supported application. While we cannot provide in-depth assistance with a specific project, we can answer your questions and steer you in the right direction for more training or reference materials. We would like to invite any NAU employee to take advantage of the Open Lab by scheduling an appointment at your convenience.
Questions about ISTT learning and training services can be directed to us in several ways: call the Solution Center; call our team line at 523-8938; email our team at istt@nau.edu; or simply visit the ISTT web site to request assistance through our feedback form at www2.nau.edu/istt/evaluation/feedback.php.
