Virtual Lab: Software Delivered to Your Desktop
Information Technology Services is pleased to bring our virtual lab to student, faculty, and staff computers. In response to increasing demand for a variety of expensive software packages and thanks to funding from the Student IT Fee, we are now able to offer network access to software packages licensed to NAU such as SPSS, ArcGIS, and JMP.
To access the lab, connect to vlab.nau.edu using the Windows XP (or Vista) Remote Desktop Connection feature. You can find Remote Desktop by navigating to the “Start” menu and then clicking on “Programs,” “Accessories,” “Communications,” and “Remote Desktop Connection.” Type in vlab.nau.edu and then enter your username in the format “NAU-students\XXX” or “NAU\XXX “ (where XXX is your username) and password. If you have trouble finding the Remote Desktop application you can also go to “start,” “run,” and type “mstsc” (without quotes). Once you are connected to the virtual lab you will see a Windows desktop that you can navigate much like the one on your own computer. When you save files, they will be stored in your dana or jan file storage area. You can also copy files onto USB storage devices from the virtual lab.
The virtual lab uses Windows Vista and Office 2007, so it is a convenient way to get a look at this new environment. If you are using a Macintosh computer you can connect to the Virtual Lab by using the Mac version of Remote Desktop Connection available free from Microsoft. We are working on licensing agreements to offer more software on the virtual lab. If you have suggestions for software that will support classroom activities at NAU, please call Lanita Collette at 3-8438.
Although it is possible to use this service over a modem connection, we recommend a high-speed Internet connection for good performance. For more information or assistance connecting to the virtual lab, visit www4.nau.edu/vlab or call the Solution Center at 523-1511 (if you are faculty or staff) or the Academic Computing Help Desk at 523-9294 or 1-888-520-7215.
