Flagstaff is a mountain community at an elevation of 6900 feet. It is located in scenic Northern Arizona, about 80 miles south of the Grand Canyon. Flagstaff lies at the foot of the San Francisco Peaks, which, at 12,670 feet, are Arizona's highest point. Downtown Flagstaff, with its historical landmarks at nearly every corner, is a great place to walk and do some shopping, or simply enjoy Flagstaff's beautiful weather. Flagstaff is also home to the Lowell Observatory, from which Pluto was discovered in 1930. Other nearby attractions include Walnut Canyon, the Museum of Northern Arizona, and Meteor Crater, the result of a meteor impact nearly 49,000 years ago. And of course, Flagstaff is also home to Northern Arizona University, the third largest University in the state. Every year, around 16,000 students attend NAU (with more than 3,000 attending in other statewide locations), adding to Flagstaff's population and local activities.
The surrounding area is ideal for people with a four season active life style in mind. The Coconino National Forest is part of the largest stand of ponderosa pine in the nation. Activities include hiking, cross country and downhill skiing, rock climbing, mountain biking, and river running.
