Student Health Tip

Helping your student deal with stress
Going to college can be stressful. There are pressures from many people and directions - professors, family, finances, room mates, relationships, and your own expectation.

For suggestions on helping your student deal with stress, check out the Healthy Campus website and then talk to your student. Here are a few tips to make that talk successful:

Listen fully to what your student is stressed about. Ask questions for clarification if need be. Don’t interrupt, discount, or overreact. Ask what he or she is doing to cope with these stressors and what he or she might need from you to help. Let your student ask whatever he or she wants—you can negotiate what you can or are willing to do. Even if your student doesn’t ask for suggestions, ask if you can make a few. Keep in mind he or she can always get counseling on campus.

Experiencing stress is normal in college and finding healthy ways to manage it can build self-confidence and be helpful in future situations, so we encourage you to talk to your student.

This health tip brought to you by NAU's Counseling and Testing Center.
