This program will highlight the industry and agency initiatives that have offered mentored internships and other professional experiences to build regional capacity by engaging students in real world LEED and sustainability challenges. The program will offer participants three distinct learning opportunities: short speaker presentations; a “lessons learned” moderated panel discussion of contractor experiences constructing to LEED criteria; and a “marketplace” – a self paced opportunity to view several different NAU student presentations on their experiences with LEED. The program will address how the experience in Northern Arizona can be a model for other areas of the country. There will be take-away handouts for each initiative.
The following NAU students will be presenting on their internships with the Grand Canyon National Park:
- Sonya Malkhassian
- An NAU Interior Design graduate, Sonya worked last year on a sustainable design of a new building for the park’s Science and Resource Management team which will be under construction in the next year. It was part of an interdisciplinary project to evaluate the current facility, complete a comprehensive conceptual site plan and transportation plan.
- Marie Snyder
- A graduate student in the Masters in Sustainable Communities program, Marie worked as the “Native Seeds” intern this year at the North Rim. She collected native seeds, conducted surveys of rare plants and invasive species and worked on campsite restoration along the Rainbow Rim trail.
- Deon Ben
- An NAU Environmental Science graduate, Deon worked last year as a “Native Seeds” intern at the South Rim as part of his senior capstone project. Deon was involved in the start-up of the park’s native seed program. He mapped source plants, developed seed collection and storage protocols, collected seeds, supervised volunteers, and worked on roadside restoration projects.
- Leslie Ayers
- An Environmental Engineering major, Leslie worked on a two-intern team to design shelters for the park’s transit stops in Tusayan. She and an Interior Design student worked together on the design, specifications, and materials ‘tool kit’ for shelters that use local, sustainable materials and systems.
- Kevin Werbvlo
- An Environmental Engineering student, Kevin worked on developing a rainwater catchment system to demonstrate sustainable systems at the park’s new visitor center near Mather Point—the Canyon View Information Plaza. Kevin worked closely with park staff and their architect to integrate the system into the design of the new theater in the complex.
