Susan Cooper uses her past experiences in business and education to develop curriculum and educator inservices for secondary and post-secondary vocational educators. She also has developed articulation agreements between Northern Arizona University and various community colleges around the state and teaches classes for NAU’s Statewide Academic Programs in Phoenix.  Her teaching experience includes: middle school, high school, community college and university levels.

Susan earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Southeast Missouri University and a Master of Arts in Vocational Education from NAU and continues her studies in Educational Leadership.

Project Director, AmeriCorps

Deidre Crawley is the Project Director for Youth in Action, an AmeriCorps program housed at the Institute for Future Workforce Development.  She is a native of Flagstaff and alumni of Northern Arizona University.  Deidre's studies include a BA in Secondary Education with a focus on English and Physical Education.  She was a leader in the development of successful practices in co-ed physical education and developmental writing techniques used throughout the state of California.

Her impact in Flagstaff and Coconino County has been primarily through the positive development of community youth.  Through organizations and programs such as Coconino County Youth Council, the Career Center, Grand Canyon Youth, Indigo Movement and Y.E.S. Youth Employability Success, Deidre and her partners have provided employability, communication, educational and life skill opportunities.

Deidre Crawley's Youth in Action mission is to facilitate meaningful partnerships with Members and their Mentors that provide positive life opportunities and growth.

Program Coordinator, AmeriCorps

After receiving a BA in Psychology from Lake Forest College, Ryan Daily joined AmeriCorps with Boys Hope Girls Hope in Chicago. There,he worked as live-in residential counselor for inner-city, at-risk youth for two years. Currently, Ryan splits his time between his
graduate studies in NAU's Masters of Community Counseling program and working as the program coordinator of Youth in Action AmeriCorps.
Ryan's main responsibilities for YiA AmeriCorps include new member recruitment and member management

Janice is an ABE/GED instructor at the CCC LEARN Center at Northern Arizona University.

She holds a M. Ed. in Community College Education from NAU and has served as a Resource Teacher for the Arizona Department of Education, Adult Ed Division for five years. Janice has over 20 years of experience with Arizona adult education and finds the students delightfully unique and challenging. Her current favorite hobby is watercolor painting.

Karla is an ABE/GED part time instructor at the CCC LEARN Center on NAU campus and has been teaching there since July 2006.

Karla has a BA in Education, MA in Education; 15 years teaching at Glendale Community College; and 12 years in the elementary school system.
She thinks working with students is the best job in the world.
Karla's interests are hiking, camping, reading and photography.

Ms. Hongeva has a B.F.A. in Visual Communication.  She has been working for the past 5 years as a Multimedia Specialist specializing in 2D and  3D animation, graphic design.  She has been working with Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator and Director for the past 3 years. Her primary work responsibilities at the Institute are the following:  Project Coordinator/Lead Designer for the Interactive Archaeology CD - ROM of the Grand Canyon and Colorado Plateau,  Multimedia Specialist/Lead Designer for the Hopi Footprints, and Instructor for the AZTEC Lab Multimedia Education Series.

Shanna is an Adult Education/GED instructor at the LEARN Center. She has a M.Ed. in Counseling from NAU, and has spent most of her career in some facet of the education field from instruction to grant writing.  Shanna also teaches math at CCC as an associate faculty member.

Paula is one of the Adult Education/ GED instructors at the LEARN Center for the past 5 years. She has a M.Ed. in Higher Education from the U of A, and has taught at the University, community college and high school levels for over 20 years.

Paula also teaches biology at CCC as an associate faculty member.

Project Director, N.A.T.I.V.E. Video Conference Distance Learning Project

For nearly 6 years Preston served as both project director and training coordinator for a $7.6 million technology integration grant.  He created summer institutes for teachers and administrators, and provided on-site support at 12 Navajo Nation school districts during the year.  His work supported classroom-level improvement through implementable curriculum development and instructional technology training.  His focus has been adult learning strategies and teacher training that change classroom practice.

He is currently working on a videoconferencing project that serves most Navajo Nation CTE teachers.  Preston’s vocational background includes the instruction and repair of OTR and Caterpillar diesel.  This will be combined with previous efforts to provide CTE teachers needed technological and curricular support for program improvement using the videoconferencing medium.

Robyn graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor degree in International Business. She worked for a few years and then joined Peace Corps. She was a Municipal Development volunteer in El Salvador from 2000-2002, and loved the opportunity to learn, work and grow in Central America. Robyn is now the Peace Corps recruiter for northern Arizona and a graduate student in the Master of Secondary Education program and Master of Liberal Studies program here at NAU. She greatly enjoys working with people who are aware of their world and the needs that exist, including cross-cultural understanding.

Professional Development, Curriculum, NATIVE & Aztec Lab

Charlene has worked for Northern Arizona University Institute for Future Workforce Development for six years. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Geography with an emphasis in Environmental Studies from California State University at Fullerton. She has over 30 years experience as an administrative assistant. Charlene serves as the assistant to Susan Cooper, Nicole O'Grady and Preston Webster. She processes all financial documents, provides research support including duplication of materials, coordinates all travel, and acts as the liaison between Northern Arizona University and all projects.

Laura Zurlo

Learn Center, Instructor

Laura has a BA in Music from New York University. She is working toward a Montessori

Teacher Certification and an AZ Teacher Certification. Also, she tutors for Literacy

Volunteers of Coconino County, and continues to work through the AmeriCorps program.
Laura is teaching ABE/GED at the CCC LEARN Center, Goodwill Industries and the CCC 4th Street Campus - all in Flagstaff. After one year of tutoring GED students at Native Americans for Community Action through the AmeriCorps program, she accepted the opportunity to continue working in Adult Education part-time. Laura says she "finds Adult Education to be an excellent opportunity to serve the community. I enjoy helping individuals to become more employable and to achieve a sense of accomplishment."
