Oboe Studio at Northern Arizona University
Rebecca Kemper Scarnati, Professor of Oboe
Welcome to the oboe studio website! As with the rest of NAU, both the School of Music and the oboe studio pays close attention to the needs of students. The music faculty and the NAU faculty in general give much more attention to students than at most state universities. A more intimate student-to-teacher ratio is made possible by keeping the campus population as a whole relatively small.
We challenge oboe students to reach for the highest performance abilities with lessons tailored to the student’s needs. Oboists at NAU receive weekly oboe lessons as well as master classes and weekly reed classes. Students may audition for membership in the NAU Orchestra, the NAU Wind Symphony and the Symphonic Band, as well as the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra as openings occur. There are also opportunities to perform in various chamber ensembles such as woodwind quintets, quartets and trios as well as oboe ensembles.
Oboe students at NAU have daily access to the oboe teacher. The oboe professor is always around to help with your reed disasters and instrument problems. We also have oboe reed making equipment available for students to use such as a gouging machine and shaper tips. This equipment helps keep the cost of your reed making down.
Those interested in studying with Dr. Rebecca Scarnati at NAU are encouraged to contact her at Rebecca.Scarnati@nau.edu Special visits can be arranged during which students can observe ensembles, come to studio class and have a lesson with Professor Scarnati.
